The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary International and serves as the engine that powers Rotary’s humanitarian work around the world. Established in 1917, the Foundation transforms the donations of Rotary members and supporters into projects that improve lives, strengthen communities, and promote peace. Through grants and global partnerships, The Rotary Foundation supports sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges—from disease prevention and clean water access to education, economic development, and environmental protection.

How the Foundation Works

The Rotary Foundation funds thousands of service projects each year by providing district and global grants to Rotary clubs and districts. These grants allow Rotarians to design and implement projects that address local and international needs while creating long-term, measurable impact.

The Foundation’s work is organized around Rotary’s seven Areas of Focus:

• Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

• Disease prevention and treatment

• Water, sanitation, and hygiene

• Maternal and child health

• Basic education and literacy

• Community economic development

• Supporting the environment

Global Impact

The Rotary Foundation is recognized as one of the most effective charitable organizations in the world. For over a century, it has funded programs that:

• Provide clean drinking water and sanitation systems

• Support schools and literacy initiatives

• Deliver lifesaving medical care and vaccinations

• Train peacebuilders and community leaders

• Help communities recover from disasters and conflict

One of the Foundation’s most historic achievements is its leadership in the global campaign to eradicate polio. Rotary launched the effort in 1985 and has helped reduce polio cases worldwide by more than 99.9%, bringing the world closer than ever to ending the disease forever.

Investing in Lasting Change

Donations to The Rotary Foundation are invested in programs designed to create sustainable, long-term solutions, rather than temporary aid. Through scholarships, vocational training teams, and humanitarian grants, the Foundation empowers communities to solve problems and build a better future.

Every contribution—large or small—helps Rotary members turn compassion into action and continue Rotary’s mission of Service Above Self.
